Making dreams come true
Aïssa’s dream? To go back to school. Hassan’s dream? To be released and learn a trade after leaving prison. Salma’s dream? To return to her village and rejoin her family.
As elsewhere in the world, millions of children in sub-Saharan Africa have dreams, more accurately basic rights, that go unfulfilled, such as having enough to eat, access safe drinking water, learning to read and write, and so on. Rights that our foundation strives to see met through its programmes relating to health, migration and access to justice.

At the heart of Africa

Do you know the countries in sub-Saharan Africa where Terre des hommes works? Burkina Faso, Burundi, Guinea, Kenya, Mali, Mauritania, Niger, Nigeria and Senegal.
Our aim is to save the lives of newborns and their mothers, many of whom are still dying in childbirth. We do this by training health workers and supplying digital diagnosis and treatment tools for conditions affecting children in remote regions where water is an issue and trained staff are scarce.
Poverty often leads children and young people in the region to migrate. Hazards exist every step of the way. To reduce the risk of exploitation and abuse, we offer support and guidance at every stage in the migration experience, by offering safe spaces and training social workers.
To uphold the rights of children and young people in trouble with the law, we encourage dialogue and alternatives to custodial sentences. We do this by working with the various justice systems, including the parties involved in customary justice. We are promoting best practice in mediation, which makes rehabilitation easier and prevents re-offending.

At the heart of health with Nana

“Let’s try an exercise. Can you hold your breath for one minute?”
The health centre in Kalake, in the Ségou region of Mali, is perpetually full from morning to evening. Nana, a midwife with an infectious laugh and a confident attitude gives resuscitation training. “If even we adults can't hold our breath, imagine what it's like for a child who knows nothing about life, who is trying to adapt to the outside world!” On that particular day, Nana was reiterating the vital importance of the three organs involved in the first minute following birth, such as the lungs, the heart and the brain.
