Support, protect, defend
Poverty, violence, injustice, and inequality of access to the most basic services such as healthcare, sanitation, school and justice all disadvantage the most underprivileged populations in Latin America.
The issues of inflation, unemployment and poverty are amplified by the consequences of the Covid-19 pandemic and internal political crises, resulting in rising social tensions.

At the heart of Latin America

To improve hygiene conditions in homes and schools, we are installing washbasins and water tanks, offering online information sessions and running awareness campaigns with children. In Ecuador, we are fighting to reduce newborn and maternal mortality rates in the indigenous communities of Cotacachi.
Poverty and violence, along with the political crisis in Venezuela, have displaced many families. In Colombia, the recruitment of children and young people by armed groups is a fact of life. To combat this scourge, Terre des hommes is improving protective measures for communities, schools and families.
We are focusing our efforts on restorative justice for juveniles in both Colombia and Ecuador, whereby the offence committed is viewed as harming the relationship between two people, rather than as an offence against the state or public authorities. The idea is not to punish the perpetrator, but to mend the relationship without going to court.

In poultry rearing with José

“I am serving a non-custodial sentence for a huge mistake I made. I am getting a great deal of emotional and practical support, which has helped me set up a small chicken-rearing business. I am also completing my schooling. I am grateful for having been given some new options. Today’s mistakes are tomorrow’s lessons.”
